Ready for the next step

Optimism and growing motivation with a little touch of apprehension.

That may sum up my outlook towards my freelance writing career as a new year approaches. This year has been a pretty good one. I’ve stayed busy with writing projects and assignments, although I know it might have been better if I’d done more marketing and networking, getting my name out there some more.

I’m optimistic I have a good idea about where I want to go with my writing in the coming year. I’ve mentioned before on this site that my goal is to get a full-time work-at-home writing job so I can continue to enjoy the freedom and efficiencies of not commuting. I think this will continue to be the direction many professions move in the coming years. It just makes sense for employers and employees.

So I plan to seek out these opportunities next year, Continue reading “Ready for the next step”

Passion comes with doing what you love

There’s a lot to be said about doing what you love as your profession. Not everyone does just that or is lucky enough to find a way to make a little money as they progress through life by doing something that excites them and keeps them motivated.

I’ve been one of the lucky ones and I have been reminded of that fact many times in my life. Most recently, I had a little downtime in writing assignments. I used that time to do some personal organizing and downsizing, other activities I find I like and look forward to when I get the chance.

But two assignments since then reinforced my love for writing. The subjects are interesting and the people I interview and facts I research for the stories are Continue reading “Passion comes with doing what you love”

Finding my mojo again

I turned down my first new client the other day. It was mostly a disappointing act, although I have to say part of the reason was I wasn’t overly excited about what I would have been writing.

It was for an air freight publication in England, so there was also a big time difference when it came to communication. The subject matter was not overly exciting, but it would probably be interesting.

It would not have made me rich, of course, but the pay was acceptable. A big factor in my decision Continue reading “Finding my mojo again”

A quick but long side trip

Going above and beyond or the extra yard are clichés for doing something beyond expectations. But I’ve always thought every cliché stems from some truth. So maybe there should be a better, more positive, word than “cliché.”

This past month or so had me stepping outside my routine when it comes to writing stories. It was kind of a mixed bag of results. Yet I’m glad I did it. Continue reading “A quick but long side trip”

Woo hoo! I’m a dot-com, too!

What I mean is the name of my freelance writing and editing efforts is now what some have told me is official for an online business entity.

Notice anything different? Me neither, but it feels kind of good. If you haven’t figured it out yet, McKibbin’s Scribblin’s is now a website instead of a blog. Yep, I finally ponied up (a very affordable amount, actually. Thanks, WordPress.) to take their name off my blog. Now it’s just mckibbinsscribblins.com.

No need to change your bookmarks, unless you want to. The old address gets you here. I’ve also recently added several pages to hopefully explain Continue reading “Woo hoo! I’m a dot-com, too!”
